When it comes to hair smoothing treatments a lot of potential soulmate clients for this service get overwhelmed by the unknown and never realize how perfect for them it could be. In this weeks blog post I am breaking down some of the more popular smoothing treatments so you can figure out if it is the hair service for you!

Let’s start off by going over what a hair smoothing treatment is.

I am not talking about just a regular shampoo blow dry where you get your hair smoothed out. These treatments take a few hours and typically involve applying the product very thoroughly and a processing time (similar to a color) followed by a detailed blow dry and flat ironing to hair quite extensively.

A few things to be wary of when it comes to picking out which smoothing treatment is right for you:

– Is the integrity of your hair severely damaged?
– Are you looking to go completely flat straight or hoping to hold on to some wave/curl in your hair?
– Are you looking for a long-term commitment or hoping it fades after a few months back to your regular hair?

Keeping these basic questions in mind when you read through the descriptions of them below will you help figure out IF a hair smoothing treatment is right for you and which one you should get done!

Another thing you want to keep in mind is that you are not obligated to stick to one type once you get one done. You can definitely bounce around and figure out first hand which one is right for you. If this is something you are considering doing, I would recommend starting with one that will fade out quicker so you don’t have residual treatment when getting another brand done.

This would not cause any damage to the hair but may give you a slightly unrealistic of what the second treatment is really like. If you went back for the second round of that one and had a completely different result this may lead to you feeling ripped off or like the stylist hid something from you. Rest assured that all stylist strives for consistency in their services and the more open and honest you are with us the better we can do that.

One of the things that all smoothing treatments have in common is that they require you to use or not use certain shampoos and conditioners so if you aren’t willing to budge on your current products at all and they don’t fit the criteria for supporting the treatment, you may want to stay away. The ticket price for these services tends to be quite steep and could lead to you feeling like you didn’t get your moneys worth if you don’t follow the instructions for at home care.

Brazilian Blow Out:

This is one of the most common hair smoothing treatments on the market. Not only is it the one that rose to mainstream first it is known for its incredible straightening outcomes and semi-permanent to permanent results. Great to use on anything from virgin hair to damaged hair.

This treatments name also probably sticks out because of it’s not so great attention it got a few years back when your stylist started to require you wear a mask while getting the treatment done and revealed its high toxicity levels. There is a Brazilian blow out Zero on the market now that claims to have no formaldehyde but its results are unimpressive. Sorry Brazilian Blow Out…nice try though!

For these reasons, this treatment ranks as a 5 for removing frizz and straightening and also a 5 for giving long lasting results. But was worst possible on the toxicity level.

Keratin Treatment:

This is a classic smoothing treatment as it has been around for a long time making it the second most talked about smoothing treatment on the market today. The Keratin Treatment is great for removing frizz and making the hair mostly straight and lasting about 3 months. Although it does come with a few more warnings as far as who is the suitable candidate for this treatment its toxicity level is also only slightly below that of the Brazilian Blow-Out. Even though the product is not toxic while being applied to the hair once it gets heated up during the blow dry and flat iron period of the service its toxicity level rises.

Keratin is the most common protein found in hair products making it a big dose of protein to the hair when you get this service done. Before you get too excited and run to make an appointment keep in mind this has pros and cons to it. If you have damaged too severely damaged hair, this treatment can be really hard for your hair to handle. It is better for severely damaged hair to either be cut or slowly brought back to life by rotating protein and moisture treatments in your shower weekly. This slowly helps the hair rebuild and doesn’t risk over proteinized. Too much protein can be the last straw if your hair feels like hay!

For these reasons the Keratin treatment clocks in at a level 3 across the board!

Cezanne Smoothing Treatment:

The Cezanne Smoothing Treatment is an all natural product that has passed EXTENSIVE testing for toxicity both while heated and unheated. This treatment is for someone who is really looking to get rid of their frizz and leave their hair feeling super nourished and healthy. If your hair is completely natural too if its integrity is compromised your hair will drink up the moisture that Cezanne Smoothing Treatment leaves in the hair.
