Makers Make Parlor — San Francisco

We are
the Makers.

A boutique hair studio built on the idea that great hair should make sense for your life, your texture, and who you actually are.

We are the Makers. Hair that finally makes sense. The Makers Way.

About Makers

The Studio.

Makers Make Parlor opened in 2014 with one intention. To create a space where everyone who walked in actually felt welcome. Not tolerated. Not just served. Welcome.

San Francisco has a way of collecting people. Artists, engineers, musicians, designers, builders, dreamers. People who came here from everywhere to make something more of their lives. That’s who sits in this chair. That’s who Makers was built for.

We are the Makers. The thread that ties every client together isn’t a hair type or a zip code. It’s that we’re all here to make something. Apps and albums, families and futures, businesses and art and everything in between. This is the parlor where the Makers get their make.

This is a private, one-on-one studio with curtained walls and a single chair. That means it’s genuinely comfortable for clients who wear hijab or religious head coverings. You have complete privacy, always. It means LGBTQ+ clients have a space that is unequivocally theirs. It means anyone who has ever felt out of place in a traditional salon environment has a place here.

No attitude. No intimidation. No pretense. Just really good hair and a space that actually feels like yours.

Rachel working at Makers Make Parlor

About Rachel

Behind the chair since 2005.

Rachel has been a stylist for nearly twenty years, but her interest in hair started much earlier. With trying to figure out her own. That curiosity never left. It became the foundation of everything she does at Makers.

She trained at the San Francisco Institute of Cosmetology and Esthetics and has continued her education through advanced mentorships and specialized techniques ever since. Her work focuses on modern blonding, natural texture, and high-performance smoothing treatments designed to enhance the integrity of the hair while creating effortless, lived-in results.

Every appointment begins with a real conversation. Not just about your hair, but about your lifestyle, your habits, and how you want to feel. The goal has never been to impose a look. It’s to translate your vision into something refined, wearable, and uniquely yours.

Outside the salon, Rachel lives on Brooks Island in the San Francisco Bay with her husband Matt, who serves as the island’s caretaker. They eloped out there last year, just the two of them, on an island most people will never set foot on.

“My mission for Makers Make Parlor is, at its core, about creating hair that feels as good as it looks. Elevated, intentional, and entirely your own.”

— Rachel, Owner

Life Beyond the Chair

Off the grid,
on the bay.

Home is Brooks Island, a small protected island in the San Francisco Bay where Matt serves as caretaker. Getting there means a mile across open water in a 10-foot inflatable boat. It is, genuinely, the dream.

It also means the schedule matters in ways it might not for other stylists. Tides and weather are real variables in Rachel’s day. If you arrive early she may still be on her way in. If you arrive late she may not be able to stay.

Last year she got married out there, just the two of them, on an island most people will never set foot on. It is a wild, beautiful, slightly unpredictable life. And she wouldn’t trade it for anything.

This is also why the cancellation policy exists. It’s not just about the schedule. It’s about the tide.
Honey waiting at the door at Makers Make Parlor

About Honey

The mascot, the security guard, the number one treat eater.

Honey is the Makers Make Parlor pup. An 85-pound pit bull with the energy of a golden retriever and the vibe of someone who has genuinely never had a bad day. You’ll usually find her in one of two places. On her couch, or at the door waiting to greet the next guest.

She sleeps through most appointments and snores. Clients love it so much they take videos. She has been known to sit with clients under the hood dryer, which Rachel will tell you is her way of keeping them safe.

Clients come back for their hair. They stay for Honey. She is sweet, mellow, endlessly charming, and fully committed to doing absolutely nothing useful. She is, in every way, part of what makes Makers feel like Makers.

If you have allergies, a fear of dogs, or would simply prefer a pup-free appointment, just let me know when you book. No questions asked, she stays home.

How We Work

The Makers Method.
01
Education First

You leave every appointment knowing more about your hair than when you came in. That’s not a bonus. It’s the whole point.

02
Design for Real Life

We build a plan around your lifestyle, your routine, and what you actually want your hair to do. Not just how it photographs.

03
One-on-One, Always

Private studio, single chair, undivided attention. Every appointment is yours from the moment you walk in.

04
Results That Last

The goal isn’t to look great for one day. It’s to have hair that works consistently, in between visits and after them.

05
Integrity of the Hair

We don’t just do what’s technically possible. We do what’s right for your hair’s long-term health and wearability.

06
Elevated, Not Intimidating

High-end doesn’t have to feel cold. Makers is warm, personal, and designed to make you feel comfortable from the first visit.

“Rachel is my go-to curl gal.”

She is friendly and personable, extremely knowledgeable about how to cut and shape my hair, and just an all around joy of a person.

The Makers Community is Growing

Makers is growing.
Here’s what that looks like.

Soon you may notice a new face in the studio. Marcela is a longtime friend and talented stylist with over a decade of experience in bridal hair, makeup, and lashes. She’s joining the Makers team, training under the Makers Method, and will be taking blowout and haircut clients while she grows into the full Makers service menu.

Occasionally she may sit in on your appointment if there’s a lesson worth learning. It won’t cost you extra time or money. It’s just the Makers way of doing things. Makers gonna make.

Tuesday appointments with Marcela coming soon.

A note from Rachel

What we’re
building next.

If you’ve made it this far, there’s a good chance you’re looking for more than just a haircut. You want someone who can help you understand your hair, work with what it naturally wants to do, and make it feel easier day to day.

That’s exactly what Makers was built for. And it’s what we’re continuing to grow into.

The vision for Makers Make Parlor has always been bigger than one chair. The community we’re building, of clients, of creatives, of people who care about doing things with intention, is something I’m deeply proud of. And we’re just getting started.

More is coming. More space, more voices, more of what the Makers community has always been about. I can’t wait to share it with you.
