What Is a Chelating Treatment? The Hair Reset Most People Don’t Know They Need
Most people know when their hair feels dry.
Most people know when it’s time for a haircut.
But very few people realize their hair may be carrying around months or even years of buildup.
If your hair suddenly feels dull, heavy, impossible to style, or like your favorite products have just…stopped working, there’s a good chance the problem isn’t your products.
It might simply be time for a chelating treatment.
What Is a Chelating Treatment?
A chelating treatment is a professional deep cleansing service that removes the things regular shampoo often can’t.
That includes:
- Hard water minerals
- Metals left behind from your water
- Chlorine from swimming pools
- Pollution
- Medication residue
- Product buildup from creams, oils, gels, dry shampoo, and styling products
Think of it as hitting the reset button on your hair.
Over time these deposits coat the hair shaft, making hair feel heavy, rough, dry, tangled, dull, or just…off.
Signs Your Hair Might Need a Chelating Treatment
You might benefit if you’ve noticed:
- Your hair feels coated or heavy.
- Your curls seem limp or less defined.
- Deep conditioning treatments don’t seem to make much difference.
- Your hair tangles more easily than it used to.
- Blonde hair has become dull or brassy.
- You swim regularly.
- You have hard water at home.
- Your scalp feels congested even though you wash your hair regularly.
Sometimes clients sit in my chair and simply say, “I don’t know…my hair just isn’t acting like itself.”
That’s usually my first clue.
Why I Almost Always Chelate Before Deep Treatments
Imagine putting expensive moisturizer on your face without washing off your sunscreen and makeup first.
It wouldn’t absorb very well.
Hair works exactly the same way.
When buildup is sitting on the outside of the hair, conditioners, glosses, bond builders, and repair treatments have a harder time getting where they’re supposed to go.
That’s why I often recommend a chelating treatment before:
- Deep conditioning treatments
- Gloss services
- Curly hair treatments
- Scalp-focused services
- Corrective color appointments
Clean hair simply responds better.
Who Shouldn’t Get One?
Chelating treatments are incredibly beneficial, but they aren’t something most people need every week.
Because they’re designed to deeply cleanse the hair, overusing them can leave hair feeling dry.
If your hair is extremely fragile, heavily lightened, or very compromised, we may adjust how often we do them or pair them with extra moisture afterward.
Like almost everything in haircare, it’s about using the right treatment at the right time.
How Often Should You Chelate?
A good general guideline is:
- Every 4 to 8 weeks if you use lots of styling products.
- Every 6 to 12 weeks for regular maintenance.
- Before major conditioning or repair treatments.
- Before corrective color appointments.
- After a summer of swimming.
The right schedule depends on your hair, your lifestyle, and even your water. Here in San Francisco, I see everything from clients with soft city water to clients commuting from areas with much harder water, so no two routines are exactly alike.
My Favorite Hair to Chelate
If you’ve been sitting in my chair for a while, this answer probably won’t surprise you.
Curly hair.
Curly routines usually involve multiple products layered together—leave-in conditioner, curl cream, mousse, gel, oils, refreshing sprays…
They’re all great products.
But even great products build up over time.
One of my favorite moments is watching someone leave after a chelating treatment and hearing them say their curls suddenly feel lighter again. Bounce comes back. Definition improves. Products start working again because they’re finally reaching the hair instead of sitting on top of months of buildup.
How I Use Chelating Treatments at Makers Make Parlor
When I first started using Olaplex years ago, I was focused on repairing damaged hair.
As they expanded their professional line, I realized something important.
Healthy hair doesn’t start with adding more treatments.
It starts with removing what’s getting in the way.
That’s why our professional chelating treatment has become more than just an add-on service.
It’s now the first step in two of my favorite salon experiences:
The Curly Makeover
We begin by removing buildup so your curls can finally receive the moisture and nourishment they’ve been missing.
From there, we rehydrate your hair and create a customized curly shape based on your real curls and together we build a routine designed specifically for your curl pattern.
The Glow Up
This is my luxury scalp and hair wellness experience.
We start by thoroughly cleansing away buildup before treating the scalp and hair with nourishing ingredients, professional products, and restorative treatments. It’s designed for anyone who wants healthier hair while also taking an hour or 2 to completely relax.
Both services start with the same philosophy: You can’t build healthy hair on top of buildup.
Can I Just Buy a Chelating Shampoo?
There are some excellent chelating shampoos available for home use, and for many people they’re a great way to maintain results between salon visits.
Professional chelating treatments, however, are generally stronger and are often paired with conditioning and restorative treatments that help replenish the hair immediately afterward.
If you’re unsure which approach is best, ask your stylist. They’ll be able to recommend the right option based on your hair, your water, and your routine.
Should You Get a Chelating Treatment?
If you’ve ever caught yourself saying:
“My hair just feels off.”
“Nothing seems to be working anymore.”
“My curls have lost their bounce.”
“My blonde doesn’t look as bright as it used to.”
There’s a good chance your hair doesn’t need another product.
It may simply need a fresh start.
Sometimes healthier hair isn’t about adding something new.
Sometimes it’s about removing everything that’s been weighing it down.
