Why Is My Hair So Dry? 8 Causes Most People Never Consider

One of my favorite questions to ask a new client isn’t…

“What products do you use?”

It’s…

“When did you first notice your hair started feeling different?”

Almost every time, they’ll pause for a second before saying something like,

“Honestly…I don’t know. It just doesn’t feel like my hair anymore.”

As hairstylists, we hear words like dry all day long.

But here’s the interesting part…

Two people can sit in my chair describing their hair exactly the same way.

“My hair is dry.”

One needs moisture.

The other needs less moisture.

One needs a haircut.

The other needs a chelating treatment.

One needs to put the flat iron down for a while.

The other simply needs a different shampoo.

That’s why I always tell my clients that dry hair is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Let’s figure out what’s really going on.

1. Your Hair Isn’t Actually Dry. It’s Covered in Buildup.

This one catches almost everyone off guard.

A typical routine today might look something like this:

Shampoo.

Conditioner.

Leave-in conditioner.

Heat protectant.

Curl cream.

Gel.

Oil.

Dry shampoo.

Texture spray.

Maybe another oil before bed because someone on Instagram swore by it.

None of those products are bad.

In fact, I probably recommend several of them myself.

The problem isn’t the products.

It’s what happens after weeks…or months…of layering them.

Eventually your hair becomes coated.

Imagine trying to water a plant that’s wrapped in plastic.

The water is there.

It just can’t get where it needs to go.

Hair works surprisingly similarly.

I see this all the time with curly-haired clients. They’re doing everything right. They’re following their routine faithfully, but one day they tell me,

“My curls just aren’t bouncing anymore.”

Usually that’s my cue to recommend a chelating treatment.

If you’ve never heard of one before, read my guide toย What Is a Chelating Treatment?ย before buying another conditioning mask.

2. Your Water Might Be Working Against You

Here’s something almost nobody thinks about.

You wash your hair several times every week.

That’s over one hundred washes a year.

Now imagine that every single wash leaves behind tiny mineral deposits.

You’d never notice after one shower.

But after six months?

Absolutely.

Hard water minerals slowly coat the hair until it begins feeling rough, tangled, dull, and almost waxy.

I see this quite a bit because many of my clients commute into San Francisco from surrounding areas, and the water can be very different from one city to the next.

If you’ve ever moved and suddenly thought your favorite products stopped working…

It might not have been your products at all.

3. Your Conditioner Isn’t the Problem

This is where the beauty industry gets us.

Hair feels dry.

We buy a better conditioner.

Still dry.

So we buy a hair mask.

Still dry.

Then a leavein.

Then an oil.

Then another leavein.

Suddenly we’ve spent hundreds of dollars trying to solve the wrong problem.

Sometimes your conditioner isn’t failing.

It’s just trying to moisturize hair that’s buried underneath buildup.

I always compare it to skincare.

If you put an expensive moisturizer on top of sunscreen, foundation, and yesterday’s makeup…

It’s not going to absorb very well.

Hair isn’t much different.

4. Your Hair Has Changed…But Your Routine Hasn’t

This one sneaks up on us.

The shampoo you loved at twenty-five might not be the shampoo your hair needs at forty.

Hormones change.

Medication changes.

Stress changes.

The environment changes.

Your hair changes.

But most of us keep buying the exact same products because they used to work.

One of my favorite parts of consultations is helping people realize that nothing is “wrong” with their hair.

It’s just asking for something different than it needed a few years ago.

Don’t worry, it happen to us all.

5. Healthy Hair Starts Before the Hair

This is probably the biggest shift in my own thinking over the last couple of years.

When I first became a hairstylist, almost all of my attention was on the hair itself.

Today?

I’m just as interested in what’s happening underneath it.

The scalp.

Because that’s where healthy hair begins.

If your scalp is inflamed, congested with buildup, excessively oily, painfully dry, or simply out of balance, your hair often reflects it.

That’s one of the reasons I created The Glow Up.

It isn’t just a relaxing service.

It’s an opportunity to care for the scalp first so healthier hair has the best possible environment to grow.

6. Heat Damage Doesn’t Always Look Dramatic

Most people picture fried blonde hair when they think about heat damage.

In reality…

It usually happens slowly.

One blow dry.

One flat iron.

One curling iron.

Every few days.

For years.

Heat isn’t the enemy.

I’m holding a blow dryer almost every day I’m behind the chair.

It’s repeated high temperatures without protection that slowly rob the hair of moisture over time.

The goal isn’t to avoid heat altogether. It’s to use the right temperature, the right technique, and to protect your hair before the heat ever touches it.

If you’re going to invest in one styling product, I’d make it a quality heat protectant. It’s one of those products that quietly works in the background every time you style your hair, helping to prevent damage before it happens.

One I recommend often isย Olaplex No. 9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum. I love that it’s more than just a heat protectant. It also helps defend against pollution, adds shine, reduces static and tangles, and leaves the hair feeling soft without weighing it down. It protects against heat up toย 450ยฐF, making it a great option whether you blow dry every day or only style your hair occasionally.

To use it, apply one to three pumps to clean, damp hair, focusing on your mid-lengths and ends. Comb it through for even distribution, then blow dry or style as usual. If your hair is fine, start with lessโ€”you can always add a little more next time.

If you’d like to try it, you can find it on my Makers Shelf.

7. Sometimes It’s Your Scalp Trying to Tell You Something

Not every flaky scalp is dandruff.

Not every itchy scalp is dry.

Not every oily scalp is dirty.

There are dozens of reasons your scalp might be sending signals.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is,

“I have dandruff, so I should shampoo more.”

Sometimes that’s exactly the opposite of what your scalp needs.

If flakes are your biggest concern, I wrote an entire article onย Dandruff vs. Dry Scalp: How to Tell the Difference.

8. Sometimes the Healthiest Thing You Can Do…Is Nothing New

This might sound strange coming from someone who works in a salon.

But I don’t think the answer is always another product.

Sometimes it’s simplifying.

Sometimes it’s removing buildup.

Sometimes it’s trimming away damaged ends.

Sometimes it’s washing less.

Sometimes it’s washing more.

The answer is almost never the same for everyone.

And that’s okay.

So…Why Is Your Hair Dry?

Maybe it’s buildup.

Maybe it’s hard water.

Maybe your routine has simply outgrown your hair.

Or maybe your scalp has been trying to get your attention for months.

The good news?

Dry hair usually isn’t a mystery once you know what questions to ask.

My Final Thought

After more than 20 years behind the chair, I’ve realized something.

People rarely come to me because they want prettier hair. I mean we all want prettier hair but…people come because they want their hair to feel likeย their hairย again.

Healthy.

Soft.

Manageable.

Predictable.

If you’re local to San Francisco, that’s exactly what we’ll spend time figuring out together. Not which product is trending this week, but what’s actually causing your hair to feel dry in the first place.

Because the best haircare routine isn’t the one with the most products.

It’s the one that solves the right problem.
